LOCATION: Santo Domingo Barrio Alto, Santiago Etla, Oaxaca de Juárez YEAR: 2016
The client wanted two simple and low-cost houses to be built in the hills of Etla, a place in the outskirts of Oaxaca often sought out by tourists visiting the city. The design became a mixture of a tradicional and contemporary architecture which suited the location and the construction costs. The result: two similar houses, with a living room/kitchen, bathroom and bedroom arrangement, inserted on the lot both overlooking the city of Oaxaca.
Constructed within six months, these houses were built entirely with local sourced and bought materials. Due to purpose and low budget of these houses the interior spaces, while comely, are basic and comply only with their function. To improve that, a metal and wood structure was implemented to “extend” the house and create an open patio/pergola area to be enjoyed by their residents.
